Introduction to Week 6

TRUTH SIX:
Let the success of others encourage not discourage you.

COMBATING COMPARISON VERSE SIX: “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.  When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”  2 Corinthians 10:12

Our lesson this week wraps up our study on Jacob, Rachel, and Leah.  Here we see Jacob returning to his homeland.  On the way home he wrestles with God, has his name changed, and makes peace with his brother Esau.  In our final two lessons we learn how Rachel dies in childbirth of her second son- a son she calls Ben-oni (meaning son of my sorrow), but a son who Jacob renames as Benjamin.

As Nicki points out, the end of the story for our two sisters is not pretty.  We don’t see them making peace with each other; Leah never receives the love she so desperately desired from Jacob, and Rachel dies getting the second son she craved.  Their children will carry a legacy of distrust and even hatred among the brothers, a distrust that will even lead to a divided kingdom hundreds of years later.  In the end, comparison will be the culprit that will steal a lot from both sisters and their families- a lot more than either could have ever imagined or believed.

In our last day’s lesson, Nicki will remind us that God can take even the messiest situations and use it for His good.  As we look at our own lives and the baggage we all deal with, let us ask the hard questions we all need to explore.  What are we focusing on:  comparison, competition, jealousy, or resentment?  What wrong attitudes do we have that we need to acknowledge and confess?  Ask God to help you deal with these issues, dwelling on God’s word and the special purpose and calling we have been given.  As Philippians 4:8 tells us,

“Whatever is true, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable- if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise- dwell on these things.”

Let us allow God’s word to grow deep in our hearts as we discover who He has made us to be, and not allow Satan’s comparisons to steal the joy God has in store for us all.  We are made in His image, with the distinct purpose of worshiping and praising our Savior for eternity.  Revel in those thoughts as you serve Him today.

Hebrews 12:1-2: "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
